Insecure Season 2 EP 3 “Hella Open” Review
Okay first off I know I'm a little late with my review for episode 3 of Insecure, but hey we are back at it. This past Sunday "Hella Open" premiered and a lot popped off. The story lines are shifting and our characters are all over the place. As a writer as I watch shows I'm always trying to predict what the hell is going to happen. This season is pretty damn unpredictable to say the least. Homegirl and Homeboy are throwing us all for a loop with this damn break up. Its too much! Lets jump right into the review of episode 3 of season 2.
So now you can't f*%#?!
I'm always interested in the way the episodes will open up. I wonder what point in our main character's life will we pick up at, and what awkward shit will she be doing. Episode three was no different. As you remember at the end of episode two Issa came to terms with Lawrence being done and wasted no time filling up his side of the closet and messaging some random in a dating app "Tryna Fuck?". Talk about being down on your luck and done with your morals. Anywho, we start "Hella Open" with Issa on the couch in a pretty romantic setting with a handsome new guy (Which was played by Luke James. Hey boo!) and we all think, "Wow. She was serious." But as soon as things start getting hot and heavy, Issa shuts down and begins to act more awkward than normal and that says a lot for her. Suddenly she can't smash, which I find funny seeing how she opened up no problem while she was in a relationship. She wasn't ready (Kevin Hart voice). Issa abruptly stops the foreplay, quickly gets dressed and stumbles out of the cuties apartment. Girl bye. I guess with her sleeping with Lawrence she just can't get her heart, mind and cooch on the same page.
Take the "W"
One thing I will be honest about right now is the fact I have not yet spoke about Issa's job story line. There has just been so much going on the last two episodes with other topics, i guess I over looked it...kinda. This past episode something resonated with me that made me have to write about it. Just a little background, Issa works for a program called "We Got Yall". Basically the organization goes out to schools to offer supplies, tutoring, advice, and outside opportunities for the students. Issa and her partner Freeda have been assigned to a pretty rough school made up of black, white and mostly Hispanic teens. The after school program was doing pretty bad, even being robbed by students for snacks at one point (these kids are ruthless lol). After a little begging and a promise of an increase Issa and Freeda were given a opportunity to stay and try to get the teens involved. After being assigned a new teacher the program had a significant increase and Issa and Freeda were able to keep good on their word. But there is a couple little problems for Freeda. The black principle is a bit inappropriate and the majority of the students that finally showed up for "We Got Yall" are black.
Now when I say inappropriate I mean it. His racist comments, which most of other black people might laugh off is rubbing Freeda the wrong way. Issa on the other hand is willing to turn the other cheek if it means she can win at at least one thing in her life right now. Is Issa wrong for just wanting to take the "W" and helping the new increase in kids or should she speak up and take another "L" in life? The better question is can the oppressed really be the oppressor. Maybe Freeda should grow tougher skin. Although she may night have spoke it, I'm sure she's thought an inappropriate joke or two.
Can you teach me how to Hoe?
In every friendship, one friend is a little more promiscuous than the other. Although Molly's priorities have shifted this season, the hoe lives within (lol). My personal opinion wouldn't call Molly a hoe. Hell she's single, successful, and for the most part she has standards when choosing her men. She just likes men. A lot of men. Well, after Issa realized the hoe that was dwelling within her last season has suddenly disappeared she went to her best friend to sign up for Hoe classes. After getting dressed and hitting a bar, which had a strange mixture of people and ages it was clear to Molly and all of us watching that Issa was rustier than we thought. She couldn't walk (her sexy walk was scary), she couldn't talk and it was clear the reason she has resorted to online dating is because she sucked at in person dating. Yes I know its hard to date and get in the swing of things after being in a relationship forever, but Honeylove was beyond terrible.
Gratefully the trip to the bar wasn't a complete bust. Molly showed us that the saying is true, "When you don't look he'll find you". Molly met a guy and he seems pretty legit, but is he too good to be true? Molly even went on a date. Yes our girl is getting back in these streets. But she's also getting in her own way. Although she took the first step she's finding every negative about her new possible prince charming. Well, if shes not in that place and mind state to completely open up to him, he needs to show her why she should. Molly you can enjoy your new found independence. I've been there before and it felt so good to find myself with no distractions.
Tasha you broke the scarf out?
You would think the roller coaster ride between Issa and Lawrence would be enough for his little heart, but Lawrence definitely got more than he signed up for with his fling Tasha. Last episode Tasha had wiped her hands with Lawrence after finding out he had a high school hump session with his ex. But it looks like after he popped up at her house, which resulted in a invite inside for "dinner" they've been back at it. Unfortunately just because Lawrence's feelings are caught up and emotionally unavailable , Tasha cant say the same. Tasha has went from being the sexy big booty bank teller to the girl who sits in bed with a scarf on and says no to sex. Yes you read that right. Lawrence thought he was going to get some ass, and Tasha gave him the push away that screams "Serious Relationship". He didn't even know how to respond when his co worker asked what his relationship status was, which he hesitantly replied "I'm dating". And if that wasn't enough of a wake up call accepting the offer to her family BBQ gave him all the uncomfortable confirmation he needed. Honestly I would've been uncomfortable if I went to a BBQ and saw a chick twerking while playing the flute. Seriously that happened. Lawrence is overwhelmed, but this is his own fault. He should have kept things at a weekend in house situation. Will this just be a cycle of heart break all season?
Dead Batteries and Battery Chargers
After running out on a potential smash and sucking at meeting new people, Issa let her horniness spill over into a build up of bad decisions. The battery dying in a woman's vibrator in the mist of a session, may be on the top of all of our worst nightmares. Not having back up batteries in the crib might just take the cake. All of these things happened to Issa and instead of just finishing the old fashion way like a normal human being, oh wait Issa isn't a normal human being. I digress. Anyhow our hornball of a main character got the bright idea that she would try to sleep with the random guy from downstairs. With a iPhone charger and wearing a shirt that read "Wrecked" (literally), Issa marched to an already opened door to alert her neighbor he left the charger at her place weeks ago at the wine down. Girl gone on. But hey I guess she was desperate. Issa over came all of her awkwardness (which including headbutting the guy while going in for a kiss) and engaged in offbeat, uncomfortable sex. So let me get this right. She couldn't have sex with the hot guy in the beginning of the episode, but she slept with her neighbor she has to see everyday? It really wasn't worth it. We know if Lawrence ever came back they have to for sure move now.
You a Fuck Nigga
You ever met a someone and the two of you just start dating so you try to control your crazy, but he keeps trying you so you have no choice but to nut up? Yeah we have all been there so I'm sure we felt Tasha 100% when she went in on Lawrence. Lawrence can be so vocal but so selfish at the same time. Men. Across town during the same time as the BBQ he ran out of after feeling too serious, Lawrence joined his co workers at a singles work mingle. What was suppose to be a quick in and out and back to Tasha and the fam, turned into a shot after shot affair. We watched on our TV screens the day turn into night. We also watched Tasha's patience for Lawrence and his bullshit run thin and eventually she couldn't hide how fed up she was a moment longer. Tasha played nice when she politely asked Lawrence to leave when he crushed her feels after blurting out "I slept with my ex". After leaving her at the BBQ and never returning, or even calling to say he wouldn't come back Tasha took a more direct approach.
"You a fuck nigga" Tasha screamed into the phone. Lawrence was taken back by her comment. You can tell Issa mostly did her raps in the mirror and not directly to him, because obviously that man has never been call a Fuck anything. Lawrence was wrong. He lead Tasha on and when things got too serious he never spoke up. I get it he didn't want to hurt her feelings, but he should have voiced his concerns. Lawrence plays the good guy role but in all honesty he used Tasha. He was hitting her like he was in love. What is a girl suppose to do? I think at this point Tasha should move on. Lawrence needs sometime alone and his rebound was turning into a new wifey and that would scare any broken heart. Lawrence should just date if he's going to date but he can't cake up and expect to not get invited to the backyard BBQs.
Episode 3 was everything I needed it to be. Everyone was "Hella Open". Maybe Issa was a bit too open, but hey everyone copes different. Will Lawrence's new found freedom and Issa's new found confidence find their way back to each other? Only the next episodes will tell. I just hope Issa keeps her bad decisions to a minimum and Lawrence gets out of the business of breaking hearts. Molly is opening up more and more everyday and I love the woman's she's becoming. Episode 4 we will need wine and popcorn.
